AL East rivals are back at it Wednesday for Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. The Yankees lead the series after a dominant performance in Game 1 and will look to close it out Wednesday night in front of their home crowd at Yankee Stadium.
This is the second year in a row that the Red Sox and Yankees have met in the Wild Card Series, and New York is trying to do what it did a season ago and eliminate Boston to advance to the ALDS.
The Yankees were fueled by a stellar outing in Game 1 from likely 2026 AL Cy Young Award winner Cam Schlittler, who allowed just two hits and struck out 10 batters over 6.1 scoreless innings. New York’s offense was powered by Ben Rice’s two-home run game, including a grand slam in the eighth inning. Schlittler and Rice are both, ironically, from Massachusetts.
Game 1 featured a pair of young starters going toe-to-toe, but Game 2 is set to feature a pair of veterans with plenty of experience as left-hander Max Fried gets the start for the Yankees while right-hander Sonny Gray will take the mound for the Red Sox. Fried missed some time during the regular season, but he posted a 2.80 ERA and 0.99 WHIP across 20 starts, while Gray owned a 2.72 ERA and led the AL with 18 wins.
It’s win or go home for the Red Sox, and while the Yankees have some breathing room, there’s nothing New York would love more than to end this series Wednesday night and punch its ticket to the ALDS against Tampa Bay.
