Michael Irvin spent his entire 12-season NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, becoming one of the defining players of the franchise’s dynasty in the ’90s. But was there ever another team The Playmaker would have considered joining?
During a recent sit-down with Hard Rock Bet, we asked the Pro Football Hall of Famer, three-time Super Bowl Champion and college football National Champion if there was a team he wished he could have played for besides Dallas.
Michael Irvin… Miami Dolphin?
His answer combined his South Florida roots with one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
Is there a team that you wish you could have played for besides the Dallas Cowboys?
Michael Irvin: “The only team that I had any thought of possibly playing for outside of the Dallas Cowboys—honestly, it was only the Miami Dolphins and Dan Marino. I would have delivered him his ring. I did deliver everybody else a ring.”
Irvin played college football at the University of Miami before the Cowboys selected him with the 11th overall pick in the 1988 NFL Draft. A return to South Florida would have united two of the region’s biggest football icons – and perhaps given the legendary Dolphins quarterback the elite target he needed to finally win a Super Bowl. Instead, the prospect of Irvin catching passes from Marino remains one of the great “what if?” scenarios in South Florida sports history.
Of course, Irvin remained in Dallas throughout his career, helping the Cowboys win three Super Bowls.
