One of soccer’s global powerhouses is back in action Friday as France hosts Italy in a UEFA Nations League League A, Group 1 match at Stade de France. However, France will still be without superstar Kylian Mbappé, who suffered a knee injury in the team’s opening match against Türkiye on Sept. 25 that is expected to keep him out for a few weeks.
Nonetheless, France won that match against Türkiye 1-0 thanks to Mbappé’s goal, although he suffered the injury while taking the shot. Even without Mbappé in the lineup, France picked up another 1-0 shutout in its next match Monday, this time against Belgium. Michael Olise stepped up and scored the lone goal in the 88th minute to help France take over the top spot in League A, Group 1.
Italy enters Friday tied with Belgium in the standings, with each team owning one win, one loss, and a +1 goal differential. Belgium did earn a 2-0 shutout victory over Italy on Sept. 25, but Italy responded with a 4-1 win over Türkiye on Monday. Alessandro Bastoni, Davide Frattesi, Michael Kayode, and Pio Esposito all found the back of the net in the victory.

Italy vs. France Best Bet: Both Teams to Score – Yes (-155)
Mike Maignan has played well in goal for France through its first two Nations League matches, recording back-to-back shutouts against Türkiye and Belgium. However, he hasn’t faced many quality scoring chances, needing to make only five saves between the two matches.
Italy just scored four goals in its most recent match, albeit against a Türkiye team that is winless to open Nations League play and has conceded five goals through its first two matches against France and Italy. If Italy can generate those types of scoring chances against Maignan and France, there’s reason to believe it can find the back of the net at least once Friday.
Yes, Mbappé is out, but France still features elite playmakers and goalscorers. France has only two goals through two matches, and one came off the foot of Mbappé, but it has scored in both matches. France will also face Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has allowed three goals so far in Nations League play.
