The MLB Division Series is set and begins with an AL Central rivalry in Cleveland, Ohio, Saturday afternoon as the No. 2-seeded Guardians host the No. 6-seeded Chicago White Sox in Game 1 of the ALDS at Progressive Field.
The AL Central standings separated these two teams by just one game at the end of the regular season, with the Guardians coming out on top as division champions and earning a first-round bye in the playoffs as a top-two seed in the American League. A large reason for how the standings played out had to do with Cleveland winning a massive series over Chicago in mid-September in which the White Sox entered in first place but the Guardians won the final two games to leapfrog their rivals for the top spot.
The Guardians went on to win seven of their last nine games following that series to maintain the division lead and enter the playoffs in good form as they hope the extended rest from having a bye doesn’t slow them down. Despite losing that series in September and subsequently making the playoffs as the final AL Wild Card team, the White Sox are also playing really good baseball lately, having won seven of their final 10 regular-season games before going on the road and sweeping Houston in the AL Wild Card Series to advance to the ALDS.
The White Sox jumped out to early leads in both games against Houston and will look to carry that momentum right into the ALDS against Cleveland. It’s a young Chicago team that surprised a lot of people this year after three consecutive 100-loss seasons prior to 2026, but sometimes teams get hot at the right time and can make a deep run, which is exactly what the White Sox are hoping to do this postseason.
Chicago may have its hands full Saturday in Game 1, however, as Cleveland has named rookie left-hander and 2026 All-Star Parker Messick its starter. Messick went 12-9 with a 2.56 ERA during the regular season and specifically posted a 2.81 ERA with 29 strikeouts across four starts against the White Sox.
Rookie reliever Hagen Smith is expected to start and serve as the opener for the White Sox. The left-hander also served as the opener in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series, where he tossed three scoreless innings.

Guardians vs. White Sox Best Bet: Over 0.5 1st Inning Total Runs (+110)
You’ve probably heard of NRFI (No Run First Inning), but we’re taking a look at the opposite with a Yes Run First Inning (YRFI).
Parker Messick was one of the top starting pitchers in the majors as a rookie in 2026, and he had plenty of success against the White Sox during the regular season, as we mentioned above. However, this Chicago lineup is hot at the right time, and sometimes familiarity with a pitcher can work in an offense’s favor even if it hasn’t produced in past meetings.
The Stats Hub notes that there has been at least one run scored in the first inning in eight of the White Sox’s last nine games against AL opponents. Chicago scored a first-inning run in Game 1 against Houston in the Wild Card Series and then scored four runs in the opening frame against a very good starter in Hunter Brown in Game 2.
The White Sox are averaging 9.5 hits and 6.5 runs per game so far in the playoffs and are batting .400 with runners in scoring position. Now, obviously, that production hasn’t all come in the first inning, but it shows how productive Chicago’s offense has been lately.
The Guardians also factor into this equation and were notably among the MLB leaders in home runs, RBIs, and runs scored during the final month of the regular season in September.
